But when you actually read it, study the context, research other Jewish writings you see something completely different. First of all, were the people of Sodom all homosexual? Nope. There is absolutely NOTHING that supports that. For starters, in every reference to it it was described as a prosperous, populous walled city. If Sodom was a city of homosexuals it certainly would not have been populous as described in the bible, since any agrarian/military civilization’s success in ancient times depended heavily on breeding lots and lots of workers in the fields and to feed a mighty military. Secondly Lot's daughters were married to men from Sodom. Do people even know this? Go back and read the account. "And Lot went out, and spake unto his SONS IN LAW which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city." - Genesis 19:14-15 Not even the biblical reference to Sodom say that the city was a homosexual city. In the book of Jude 5, it speaks about angels who forsook their natural realm, a reference to the story in Genesis about the “Sons of God” who had inter-species sex (angel with human) with the daughters of men. Then immediately after it mentions Sodom as being "in like manner" guilty of going after “strange flesh”. The actual ancient Greek term used for "strange" is “heteras” (ironically is the root of the word heterosexual i.e. men are of a different flesh than women). The men of Sodom were going not after “the same” flesh as humans but it translates literally as “different form/flesh”, meaning supernatural or not the same as human flesh by wanting to rape the two angelic visitors. Ezekiel when it discusses what the sin of Sodom was, it makes no mention of the men of the city being homosexual. In fact there is no ancient Hebrew word for homosexual either (as it is a 19th Century medical term and entirely modern definition) nor was even the closest terminology to it "quadesh" (male prostitute) used. Ezekiel 16: 49, says that the sin of Sodom was greed, pride, fullness of bread and a wicked refusal to help the poor. According to the gospels, when neighboring villages were rude and inhospitable to Jesus and his disciples and refused to give them food and rest he compared them to Sodom in Matthew 10:11-15. Where on earth did people get the idea that the angry mob of men outside Lot's door wanted to make sweet, gentle, consensual love to the angels out of feeling genuinely sexually attracted to them? LOL! The very passage says their intentions were VIOLENT. Read the account again where they told Lot, "We are going to do WORSE to you than what we were planning to do your guests!" This was not about sexual attraction or love or lust. It was about VIOLENCE and we know that rape does not require someone to be any particular orientation. We also know it was gang rape because there is what biblical scholars call a "doublet" story in Judges 19 that is extremely similar to Genesis 19. Violence was par for the course in Sodom. Actual biblical students would have read the book of Jasher (a Hebrew text referred to in Samuel but left out of the bible) and its far detailed description of Sodom and Gomorrah and what they used to do to any foreigner or needy or hungry person who dared to seek refuge inside their walls. They were selfish, prideful, greedy, sadistic and very racist and xenophobic. They would torture visitors by chopping off their limbs or stretching them. There is an account of them covering a girl in honey and letting bees sting her to death because she took pity on a old beggar and gave him food. They would watch a person starve to death and laugh. So an attempted gang rape of two unauthorized visitors of a foreign immigrant (Lot was not a native of the city) was par for the course. The misappropriation of this scripture to force-fit an application to LGBT people is biblical abuse to support bigotry. Jewish rabbis have never used the passage in their Torah this way. It has always been used as a morality lesson on HOSPITALITY. If you understand ancient times you would know that hospitality was a common decency expected in times when travel was on foot for long days in harsh arid environments. You were expected to welcome strangers, offer water, food and rest. Even if your accommodation was as humble as a single tent, this human kindness was mandated, far less if you had rich accommodations like the people of Sodom, who had a whole walled city, fertile green land, lots of bread and water. Now, if your pastor, priest, reverend (many who have had the benefit of biblical scholarship) have been so dishonest in leading you to believe this account is about any gay person today, even lesbians, imagine what other ways they have been using the bible just to support other biases and bigotry?
