The proposed bridge connecting the islands of Panay, Guimaras and Negros is among the projects that are expected to be approved by President Rodrigo Duterte next month, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).
NEDA Director-General Ernesto Pernia, in a report by Rappler, disclosed that the NEDA Board, led by Duterte, will meet in February.
“We will have an ICC (Investment Coordination Committee) first somewhere in between,” he said.
Pernia is hoping that the inter-island bridge will be rolled out before the end of the year.
The bridge, which has an estimated cost of P21.67 billion, will be implemented by the DPWH. The construction of the project will run for six years.
The first phase of the project covers the bridge connecting Iloilo and Guimaras. The second and third phases are the Guimaras-Negros Bridge and Negros-Cebu Bridge, respectively.
DPWH-6 Director Wenceslao M. Leaño said the feasibility study for the proposed bridge was made by the Korean Export-Import Bank in 2016
The Panay-Guimaras-Negros Link Bridge is one of the “big-ticket” projects presented by the DPWH in last year.
The projects aim “to solve the problems brought about by traffic congestion, inadequate mass transport facilities, air pollution, and the lack of healthy, green livable community spaces.”
The Duterte administration sees increased infrastructure spending as key to move the country forward and improve the lives of the Filipino people by generating massive investments, creating millions of jobs and lowering prices of commodities. IMT
